The University Club Scholarship program is an opportunity to focus the power of our community and provide assistance to those in our local high schools. Visit the links on the left to meet our scholarship recipients and read their touching letters. An online donation form is available for your convenience. The following information explains the history and importance of the Scholarship Program.
Our History
When the University Club was first established, the founders implemented a four-year college scholarship program for under-privileged high school seniors in the surrounding areas. At that time, all club members contributed to this fund, making it possible to improve the lives of many young people. Our founders felt it was very important to give back to our local community, and this tradition continues at the University Club of Palo Alto. Today, we are more committed than ever to help students who work so hard, but yet have so little. A good education is the best investment that we can make to better our community, especially in California which touts many world class academic institutions.
Our Goal
Currently, we have 27% participation, and we are usually able to fund three new scholarships yearly. Uncertain economic conditions and rising tuitions have us deeply concerned. In addition, in the past few years, many new families have joined our community. Therefore, the Scholarship Committee has set a new goal of 100% participation from all club members as we follow the example set by the founding families. Please consider joining the many club members who give to this time-honored tradition.
The Process
The Scholarship Committee works with local high school representatives to identify a group of student scholars who are motivated academically and are focused on community service. Many of these student scholars are the first in their families to attend college and all of them have very limited funds to pay for tuition and living expenses. Their hope is to earn a college diploma, build a better future for themselves, and give back to their communities. As a committee, we read applications, interview students, and decide together on the scholarship winners. The process is difficult since there are many qualified candidates, yet each year, based on your donations, we select one to three students to receive our scholarships.
It is simple: you can choose to make an ongoing monthly donation or, if you prefer, a one-time donation. Any amount will be greatly appreciated, and your contributions are tax-deductible.
